Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does the inside of a seashell shimmer with colors?
The Big Idea
The inside of many shells, called mother-of-pearl, is built from lots of super-thin layers of a chalky material. Light bounces off the top and bottom of each layer, and some colors line up and grow brighter. Tilt the shell, and the colors change.
Thin Layers
Step one: thin layers. The shell's inner coat is made of hundreds of ultra-thin layers. They are stacked like pages in a book, and each one is incredibly thin.
Colors Line Up
Step two: colors line up. Light bounces off the top and bottom of each layer. For some colors, the bounced waves add together and look bright, while other colors cancel out.
Tilt and Change
Step three: tilt and change. When you tilt the shell, the path through the layers changes. Different colors line up, so the shimmer shifts. This effect is called iridescence.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Look at the inside of a seashell, which is the shiny part. A pearly button works too. Hold either one under a lamp, and turn it a little. How many different colors can you find?
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Soap bubbles, beetle wings, and some feathers use thin layers too. Pearls shimmer for the same reason as the inside of a shell, because they are made of the same stuff. The colors are made by light, not by paint. Handle shells gently, because their edges can be sharp.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Look at the inside of a seashell or a pearly button under a lamp. Tilt it slowly. How many different colors can you find? Do they change as you move your head?
