Why Is the Word Ambulance Written Backward on the Front of the Van?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why is the word AMBULANCE written backward on the front of the van?

The Big Idea

A mirror flips writing from left to right. AMBULANCE is printed backward on the front of the van. So a driver looking in the rear-view mirror reads it the right way round.

Backward Word

Step one: a backward word. The letters on the front of an ambulance are flipped from left to right. If you look straight at the van, they look strange.

The Mirror Flips

Step two: the mirror flips. A mirror reverses writing from left to right. So a reversed word turns normal again when you see it in the mirror, just like magic.

Move Over

Step three: move over. A driver ahead glances in the rear-view mirror and instantly reads AMBULANCE. That tells them to move over and let it pass, which can save someone's life.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Here is the front of the ambulance. The letters are printed backward. The driver ahead sees them in the mirror. And the word reads the right way round.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Leonardo da Vinci wrote many of his notes in mirror writing. He held his notes up to a mirror to read them. Letters like A, H, and O look the same in a mirror. Always pull over for an ambulance with flashing lights.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Write your name backward on a piece of paper, one letter at a time in reverse order. Then hold it up to a mirror. Can you read it? Which letters look the same in the mirror?

Outro

A mirror flips writing, and that helps ambulances. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
