Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How does a microscope show things too small to see?
The Big Idea
A microscope uses two lenses, one close to the object and one near your eye. Together they magnify the picture in two steps. That lets you see things too small for your eyes alone.
First Lens
Step one: the first lens. The lens near the sample makes a bigger picture of it. This is called the objective lens, and it does the first, big magnifying job.
Second Lens
Step two: the second lens. The lens at the top works like a magnifier for that bigger picture. It is called the eyepiece, and it makes the picture bigger again.
Add Light
Step three: add light. A small light shines through or onto the sample. With the right lenses, you can see the tiny cells of a leaf, and even tiny animals living in pond water.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! You look in through the eyepiece lens. The objective lens is close to the sample. The sample sits on a little glass slide, and the slide sits on the stage. A small light shows it clearly.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Some microscopes make things look hundreds of times bigger. Plants and animals are built from tiny units called cells. Cells in a leaf look like little boxes. Handle glass slides carefully.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Look at a pinch of salt and a pinch of sugar with a magnifying glass. Draw the shapes of the crystals. Can you tell the two apart? Use the magnifier indoors, away from the Sun.
