Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does light bounce off a mirror at the same angle it hits?

The Big Idea

Light bounces off a mirror at the same angle it came in, just like a ball bouncing off a wall. Scientists call this the law of reflection. A low beam leaves low, and a steep beam leaves steep.

Ball Bounce

Step one: think of a ball. Throw a ball at a wall at a slant, and it bounces away at a matching slant. Light acts in a very similar way when it hits a mirror.

Low In, Low Out

Step two: low in, low out. Aim a beam at a mirror at a low angle, and the bounced beam leaves at a low angle too. It leaves on the opposite side, like a mirror image of its path.

Use the Rule

Step three: use the rule. Pool players use the same idea to plan bank shots off the cushion. Engineers use it to design mirrors for telescopes and cars.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! First, a beam of light travels toward the mirror. It hits a flat, smooth mirror. Then it bounces away in a new direction. The angle going in matches the angle going out.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Light travels in straight lines until something makes it bounce or bend. The angles are measured from an imaginary line standing straight up from the mirror. The rule works for every flat mirror. Keep beams away from faces and eyes.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Lay a small mirror flat on a table, and shine a flashlight at it from the side. Can you aim the bounced beam at a sticky note on the wall? Move the flashlight and watch the bounce move. Never shine it at anyone's eyes.

Light bounces off a mirror at the same angle it came in. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
