Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why can you see yourself in a mirror but not in a wall?

The Big Idea

A mirror is so smooth that light bounces off it in an orderly way, which makes a clear picture of you. A wall looks smooth, but up close it is full of tiny bumps. Those bumps send light in every direction, so no picture forms.

Light Arrives

Step one: light arrives. Light from a lamp or window lands on a mirror, a wall, and you. Some bounces off and travels to your eyes.

Smooth Bounce

Step two: the smooth bounce. On a mirror, all the light rays bounce off in the same neat way. They stay in order, so your eyes see a clear picture. Scientists call this reflection.

Messy Bounce

Step three: the messy bounce. A wall has tiny bumps that send light off in different directions. Scientists call this scattering.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! A smooth mirror keeps the light rays in order. A bumpy wall scatters them everywhere. A glossy photo can work like a faint mirror. So can a shiny pan lid.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! A mirror is glass with a thin shiny metal layer behind it. Its bumps are far smaller than the size of a light wave. Smooth for light is smoother than smooth for fingers. Ask a grown-up to handle glass mirrors.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Hold a glossy magazine page and a plain sheet of paper at the same angle, near a window. Which one shows a reflection of the window? Why do you think that is? Never look at the Sun.

Outro

A mirror bounces light in order, and a wall scatters it. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
