Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why can you see the shadow of a cloud sliding across a field?

The Big Idea

A cloud blocks sunlight and casts a shadow on the ground below. The wind pushes the cloud along, so its shadow glides across the field. Where the cloud is, it is dark. Where it is not, the Sun shines!

Cloud Blocks Light

Step one: a cloud blocks the Sun. A cloud is made of tiny water droplets that scatter and soak up sunlight, so the ground underneath is darker.

Wind Pushes

Step two: the wind pushes the cloud. As the cloud drifts across the sky, its shadow slides across the land at the same speed. That is why cloud shadows seem to race across fields on windy days.

Patches

Step three: shadow patches and sunny patches. From a hill, you can see dark patches drifting over the land with bright patches beside them. Cloud shadows can race across a whole valley.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! A cloud floats high above the field. The wind pushes it along. Its shadow glides across the ground. And sunny patches shine right next to it. It is a moving map of shade and sunshine!

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Clouds are made of tiny water droplets. Wind pushes clouds, and their shadows move too. Pilots notice cloud shadows racing across the land far below. Stay with a grown-up on hills, and never look at the Sun.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! On a partly cloudy, breezy day, find a spot with a big view. A hill or a playground works well. Watch the patches of shadow and sunshine move. How fast can you follow one with your eyes?
