Why Can a Flashlight and Your Hands Make a Shadow Animal?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why can a flashlight and your hands make a shadow animal?

The Big Idea

A shadow forms where something blocks light. Your hands are the object, and the wall catches the shape. Light travels straight, so the shadow keeps your hand's outline! Time to put on a puppet show!

Light Source

Step one: the flashlight sends out straight rays. They travel in straight lines until something gets in the way. Your flashlight is called the light source.

Hands Block

Step two: your hands block some of the rays. The rays that hit your hands cannot reach the wall. The sharp edge of your hand gives a sharp edge to the shadow.

Shape on the Wall

Step three: the wall shows the shape. The dark space has the outline of your hands, so a bird, dog, or rabbit appears. Fingers become wings, ears, or a long dog nose on the wall.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Wiggle your fingers like wings to make a bird. Fold your hands to make a dog with a snout. Raise two fingers for rabbit ears. Move your hands closer to the light, and your animal grows into a giant! A shadow puppet show is just light and imagination.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! A shadow keeps the outline of the object. The closer your hands are to the flashlight, the bigger the shadow. Shadow puppets have entertained people for thousands of years. Never shine a flashlight at anyone's eyes.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! In a dim room, aim a flashlight at a blank wall. Make a bird, a dog, or a rabbit with your hands. Slide your hands closer to the light. Watch your animal grow into a giant!
