Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why are shadows on snow sometimes blue?

The Big Idea

Shaded snow looks blue because it is lit by the blue sky instead of direct sunshine. The sky scatters blue light in every direction, and that light fills the shadow. Look for it next time it snows!

Sun and Sky

Step one: snow gets two kinds of light. It gets direct sunlight, and it gets light from the whole sky above. In the sun, snow gets both sunlight and sky light.

Blocked Sun

Step two: a shadow blocks the Sun. A tree or fence stops the direct sunlight, but the sky can still reach the shaded snow. In the shadow, only the sky light is left.

Blue Glow

Step three: the sky glow is blue. The sky scatters blue light everywhere, and snow reflects it, so the shaded snow looks blue. Blue sky light is gentle, but it is strong enough to tint white snow.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Direct sunlight lights the sunny snow. A tree blocks that sunlight. Blue sky light still fills the shade. And the shaded snow glows blue. Painters notice these blue shadows too.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! The sky scatters blue light in every direction. Shaded snow is lit only by that blue glow. Painters often mix a little blue into their snow shadows. Dress warmly and stay with a grown-up outside in winter.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! On a sunny winter day, step outside with a grown-up. Find the shadow of a tree or a fence on the snow. Look closely for the blue tint. Next time, try spotting blue shadows on other bright surfaces!
