Why Do Tree Rings Near Volcanoes Tell Stories?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do tree rings near volcanoes tell stories?

The Big Idea

Tree rings near volcanoes tell stories because trees grow a new ring every year. Each ring is a page in the tree's diary, and eruptions can leave marks on those pages. Scientists read the rings to learn when eruptions happened.

One Ring a Year

Step one: one ring a year. A tree grows a new ring every year, wide in good years and narrow in hard years. So by counting the rings, you can count the years.

Eruption Marks

Step two: eruptions leave marks. Ash can bury roots, and volcanic gas high in the sky can cool the climate for a while. That can cause narrow rings, or even frost damage inside the wood.

Match and Date

Step three: match and date. Scientists match ring patterns from old trees and old logs to build a long calendar. Then they can spot a marked ring and say which year the eruption happened.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Each ring shows one year of growth. A wide ring means a good year. A narrow ring means a hard year. A narrow ring in a special year can point to an eruption. Rings are like a nature calendar.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Some trees live for hundreds or thousands of years. Scientists take a thin core from a tree, without cutting it down. Rings also record droughts and cold summers. Ask a grown-up before you touch any tree.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Draw a tree stump with a dozen rings. Make some wide and some narrow. Mark one narrow ring as an eruption year. How could you find out how many years ago it happened?
