Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do volcanoes exist on other planets and moons?

The Big Idea

Volcanoes are not only on Earth. They exist on other planets and moons, too. Anywhere a world has heat inside, it can have volcanoes. Some are even bigger than anything on our planet.

Mars Giant

Step one: a giant on Mars. Mars has a volcano called Olympus Mons, about 22 kilometers tall. That is about two and a half times as tall as Mount Everest, the tallest mountain above sea level on Earth.

Fiery Moon

Step two: a fiery moon. Jupiter's moon Io has hundreds of active volcanoes. Jupiter's gravity squeezes and stretches Io, and that heats the moon from inside.

Icy Volcanoes

Step three: icy volcanoes. Saturn's moon Enceladus has icy volcanoes that spray water into space. So a volcano does not always spray lava. It can spray water and ice.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Mars has the tallest volcano we know. Io has the most active volcanoes. Enceladus has icy volcanoes. And Earth has about 1,300 volcanoes that could erupt, on land and under the sea. Heat inside is the key, so any world with a warm inside might have volcanoes.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Olympus Mons is about 22 kilometers tall. Mount Everest is about 8.8 kilometers above sea level. Io's volcanoes are heated by Jupiter's gravity. Some distant worlds spray ice instead of lava.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Measure 22 meters of string for Olympus Mons, using 1 meter for each kilometer. Measure 8.8 meters for Mount Everest. Stand at the end of each. How much taller is the Martian volcano?

Outro

Wherever a world has inner heat, it can have volcanoes. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
