Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do mud pots plop?

The Big Idea

A mud pot is a pool of thick, bubbling mud, and it goes plop! Steam and gases rise up through the ground below. Let's find out why the mud is so thick and sticky.

Acid Makes Clay

Step one: acid makes clay. Steam and gases rise through water that is acidic. The acid slowly breaks the rock into tiny bits of clay, and the rock turns soft and muddy.

Thick Mud

Step two: thick mud. The clay mixes with the little water there to make a thick, sticky mud. A mud pot has less water than a hot spring, so it is much thicker.

Slow Bubbles

Step three: slow bubbles. Gas bubbles push up through the thick mud, and it stretches around them. When a bubble finally bursts, it goes plop, and sometimes the mud flicks up in little blobs.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Acid slowly turns the rock into clay. The clay mixes with water to make thick mud. Gas bubbles rise slowly through it. Each bubble bursts with a plop.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! A mud pot has little water, so it does not splash far. The mud can be very hot. Some mud pots smell like rotten eggs, because of sulfur gases. Always stay on the boardwalk near mud pots.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, make thick pudding or oatmeal and let it cool. Blow air through a straw into it, gently, and watch the bubbles plop. Never suck in through the straw. How does a thick mix change the way bubbles look?
