Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why can you cook food in some hot springs (historically)?

The Big Idea

Long ago, people did cook food in a few hot springs, using spots they knew well. Some hot springs are almost as hot as boiling water. But today, we never cook or touch food in wild hot springs.

Very Hot Water

Step one: very hot water. Some springs are almost as hot as boiling water, which is 100 degrees Celsius. Water that hot can burn skin in a second.

Hidden Dangers

Step two: hidden dangers. Hot springs can hide scalding water, harmful germs, and acid. The ground around them can also be thin and weak.

Stay Safe Today

Step three: stay safe today. In parks today, cooking or touching the water is never allowed. Ask a grown-up to cook for you in a kitchen instead.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! First, the water can be nearly boiling. Next, it can hold harmful germs and acid. The ground around it can be thin and weak. So the safest plan is to look, but never touch.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Never put food or hands in wild hot springs. Cooking in hot springs is not allowed in parks today. Boardwalks keep people safely away from the heat. Rangers and signs are there to keep everyone safe.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, watch a pot of water heat on the stove with a cooking thermometer, and keep back. Notice the temperature when the water starts to boil. Water cannot get hotter than that, until it turns into steam. Which springs would be hot enough to cook? Hint: the very hottest!

Outro

Hot springs are for looking, not cooking. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
