What Crafty Clover says in this video
Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do continents have deep roots?
The Big Idea
Continents have deep roots, just like an iceberg floating in the sea! Thick, light crust floats on the heavier rock of the mantle. Most of it is hidden underneath, just like most of an iceberg.
Light Floats
Step one: light floats. Continents are made of thick, light crust. It floats on the denser mantle rock below, the same way an iceberg floats in water.
Deep Roots
Step two: deep roots. Under tall mountains, the crust pushes down deep into the mantle. Those hidden roots can be much deeper than the mountains are tall.
Rising Back Up
Step three: balance. This balance of floating and sinking is called isostasy. When heavy ice melts away, the land slowly rises, like a pillow after you stand up.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Continents are thick, light crust. They float like an iceberg, mostly hidden. Tall mountains have deep roots below, hidden from view. And when weight leaves, the land rises slowly back up, like a boat unloading cargo.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Parts of Canada are still rising after the ice age, since the ice sheets melted. The ice sheets were more than a kilometer thick. Land near Hudson Bay is rising about a centimeter a year. Continent crust is about 30 to 50 kilometers thick.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Float wooden blocks of different heights in a tub of water. Which block sticks out the most? Which one sinks the deepest? Measure with a ruler. The tall blocks are like mountains with deep roots! Tall ones sink deeper.
Outro
Continents float, and mountains have deep roots. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
