Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why are there volcanoes near trenches?
The Big Idea
Volcanoes pop up near ocean trenches because of water! When one plate sinks under another, it carries water down with it. That water helps hot rock melt.
A Plate Sinks
Step one: a plate sinks. At a trench, one plate dives under another. The sinking plate carries seawater trapped in its rock, like a wet sponge.
Rock Melts
Step two: the rock melts. As the water seeps into the hot rock above, it makes the rock melt more easily. It works a bit like salt melting ice on a snowy road.
Volcanoes Rise
Step three: volcanoes rise. The new magma is light, so it rises up through the plate above. It builds a line of volcanoes behind the trench, in a long curved line.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! A plate sinks down into the mantle. It releases water into the hot rock above. The rock melts and becomes magma. The magma rises and erupts as a volcano, far above where the plate sank.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! The Aleutian Islands in Alaska formed this way. So did the Cascade volcanoes of the Pacific Northwest. The Cascade range includes Mount Garibaldi in British Columbia. Scientists carefully watch these volcanoes with instruments to keep people safe.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Ask a grown-up for an ice cube, and set it on a plate. Sprinkle a little salt on top and watch it melt faster, with tiny channels. Salt lowers the melting point of ice, so it melts even when it is cold. Water does something similar to hot rock!
