What Crafty Clover says in this video
Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why is seafloor younger near ridges?
The Big Idea
The seafloor is youngest right next to the ridge! New seafloor forms there and slowly moves away on both sides. So the farther you go, the older the rock gets.
New Rock Forms
Step one: new rock forms. At a ridge, hot rock rises and cools into new seafloor. That rock is only just born, so it is the youngest on the whole seafloor.
A Slow Belt
Step two: a slow conveyor belt. As more rock forms, the older rock gets pushed away from the ridge on both sides. It is like a very slow conveyor belt at the airport, carrying rock away from the ridge.
Older Farther Out
Step three: older farther out. The farther you travel from the ridge, the older the rock is. The oldest ocean floor is only about 180 million years old.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Right at the ridge, the rock is brand new. A little farther out, it is a bit older. Farther again, it is older still. And the oldest rock is far from the ridge.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! The ocean floor is like a very slow conveyor belt. Some continents have rocks billions of years old. So why is the seafloor so young? Because old seafloor is recycled in subduction zones.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Draw a long strip of paper with a ridge in the middle. Color the youngest stripe in the center red. Then color orange, yellow, and blue stripes as you go outward. Where is the oldest? At the far edges, away from the ridge!

Seafloor is young near ridges and older farther away. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
