Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do matching rock belts appear across oceans?
The Big Idea
Rocks on opposite sides of the Atlantic Ocean match each other! Rocks in Newfoundland and in Scotland are the same age and type. That is because they were once part of the same mountain chain.
Once Together
Step one: once together. Hundreds of millions of years ago, the continents were joined, and a mountain chain ran across them. It stretched across what is now Canada, Scotland, and Norway.
Drifting Apart
Step two: drifting apart. Later, the plates pulled away from each other and the Atlantic Ocean opened between them. The mountain chain was split in two.
Clues Across
Step three: clues across the sea. Matching rocks, plants, and fossils on both sides of the ocean were big clues, long before anyone used GPS. They helped scientists work out how plates move, and how continents slowly drift.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Rocks in Newfoundland match rocks in Scotland. Old plants show up on both sides too. So do fossils of the same animals. Put them together, and the clues fit like a puzzle.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! The Appalachian Mountains are related to mountains in Scotland and Norway. Geologists compare rock age, type, and layers. Matching clues helped prove that continents drift. The Atlantic Ocean opened up between these old neighbors.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Tear a piece of newspaper in two, then mix up the pieces. Can you match the torn edges and the words on them? Geologists match rocks across oceans the same way, using clues. Try it with a friend, and see who matches fastest!
