Why Do Bird Windows Need Stickers?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do bird windows need stickers?

The Big Idea

Bird windows need stickers because birds cannot tell that glass is solid! Glass can reflect trees and sky, or look like an open path. Stickers help birds see a barrier.

Tricky Glass

Step one: spot the trick. Glass can reflect trees and sky, or look like an open path. Birds do not realize that glass is a solid object. They fly toward the picture they see.

Break It Up

Step two: add markings. Stickers, tape patterns, or special markings break up the reflection. Then birds see a barrier and stop, instead of flying straight in.

Small Gaps

Step three: keep gaps small. Small gaps in the pattern, about the width of a hand, work well. Closing curtains or blinds can also help.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Trees and sky reflect in the glass like a mirror. Stickers break up the reflection. Keep the spaces between them about a hand wide. Blinds and curtains can help, too.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Many birds hit windows every year and can get hurt, even at home. Marking the outside of the glass works best, because that is where the reflection is. Closing curtains or blinds can also help. If you find a stunned bird, tell a grown-up and do not touch it.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With permission, help put bird-safe stickers or tape lines on one window at home or school. Then look at the window from outside. Can you still see the reflection through the markings? Share what you discover with a grown-up.
