Why Do Meerkats Take Turns as Lookouts?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do meerkats take turns as lookouts?

The Big Idea

Meerkats take turns as lookouts so the whole group can stay safe! One meerkat, called the sentinel, stands on a high spot and watches for danger. The others can dig for insects, so nobody has to watch all day.

Stand Guard

Step one: stand guard. One meerkat, the sentinel, stands on a high spot, like a rock or a bush. It watches the sky and ground for hawks and snakes, and it stays very still and alert.

Dig and Eat

Step two: let others eat. While the sentinel watches, the others dig for insects and other small snacks. They can keep their heads down because someone is watching.

Bark an Alarm

Step three: sound the alarm. If the sentinel spots danger, it barks, and everyone runs for the burrow. Sharing the job gives every meerkat time to eat and rest, and teamwork helps everyone survive.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The lookout stands tall on a high spot. The others dig for insects. An alarm bark warns everyone. The group dashes into the burrow, safe and sound.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Sentinels usually have full bellies before they take a turn. Meerkats live in groups called mobs or gangs. They live in sunny, dry places in southern Africa. Watch meerkats at a zoo or on video.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Play a lookout game with friends. One of you watches for a pretend predator while the others play. Switch every two minutes. What was good about taking turns?
