Why Do Octopuses Taste with Their Arms?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do octopuses taste with their arms?

The Big Idea

Octopuses taste with their arms because their suckers have taste sensors! Each sucker has taste and touch sensors. So when an arm touches something, it can taste it at the same time.

Thousands of Suckers

Step one: count the suckers. An octopus has thousands of suckers along its eight arms. Each sucker has taste and touch sensors.

Touch and Taste

Step two: explore. When an arm touches something, it can taste it at the same time. An octopus can explore a crack and decide what is inside without using its eyes or mouth.

Arm Smarts

Step three: think with the arms. Most of an octopus's nerve cells are in its arms, not its head. So each arm has some control of its own.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! An octopus has eight arms. Each arm is covered in suckers. The suckers have taste and touch sensors. Nerve cells in the arms help them think for themselves.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! An octopus has three hearts and blue blood. Most of an octopus's nerve cells are in its arms. An octopus can squeeze through tiny gaps because it has no bones. Watch octopuses at an aquarium or on video, and never touch one in the wild.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Close your eyes and have a friend put a small safe food in your hand, like a cracker or a grape. Can you tell what it is by touch and smell? How is that like an octopus tasting with an arm? Check with a grown-up about food allergies first.
