Why Do Dogs Smell So Much Better than Humans?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do dogs smell so much better than humans?

The Big Idea

Dogs smell so much better than people because they have far more scent sensors! A dog has about 300 million of them in its nose, and a person has about 6 million. The part of a dog's brain that handles smells is also much bigger.

More Sensors

Step one: count the sensors. A dog has about 300 million scent sensors in its nose, compared with about 6 million in a person. That is around 50 times more.

Short Sniffs

Step two: sniff in puffs. A dog sniffs in short, quick puffs to pick up more scent. Its wet nose helps catch scent molecules from the air.

A Big Smell Brain

Step three: process it. The part of the brain that handles smells is much bigger in a dog. So a dog can follow a trail that people can't detect at all.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! A wet nose helps catch scent molecules. Millions of sensors detect them. Quick sniffs bring in more air. A big smell brain figures it all out.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Dogs can smell some things days after they were left behind. Some dogs are trained to find lost people or help in airports. A dog's sniff can tell it who has walked by. Meet a friendly dog only with a grown-up, and ask the owner first.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Hide a cinnamon stick in one of three covered cups. Ask a friend to sniff to find it with their eyes closed. Then, if a grown-up says it is okay, try with a friendly pet. Who is better at it?
