Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do animals need skin care from nature?

The Big Idea

Animals take care of their skin, fur, and feathers in many clever ways! Birds roll in dust or preen their feathers with oil. Elephants spray dust and mud on their backs, and cats lick their fur.

Dust and Mud

Step one: take a dust bath. Many birds roll in dry dust, and elephants spray dust and mud on their backs. It helps get rid of pests, and it also keeps the skin cool and covered from the hot Sun.

Lick and Preen

Step two: clean the coat. Cats lick their fur, and birds preen their feathers, even spreading a little oil. This keeps their coats clean, smooth, and working well, so they stay warm and dry.

Groom Together

Step three: help each other. Monkeys and apes groom each other, picking out dirt and tiny pests. It also helps friends stay close and trust each other, and it feels good too.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Dust and mud cover the skin and cool it. Cats lick their fur clean. Birds preen each feather into place. Monkeys groom each other like friends.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Some birds even rub ants on their feathers, which may help clean them. Grooming gets rid of pests, dirt, and loose hair. It is health care, not vanity. Watch animals groom from a distance.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! List three ways that both people and animals take care of their bodies. Think about brushing hair, washing, and cleaning teeth. Which ones are the same? Which are different?
