Why Does Motion Sickness Happen?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does motion sickness happen?

The Big Idea

Motion sickness happens when the signals from your eyes, inner ears, and body do not match. Your brain gets mixed-up messages, and that can make your tummy feel queasy. It is very common, and it is not your fault at all.

Eyes Say Still

Step one: your eyes. When you read in a car, your eyes see the page staying still. So they tell your brain that you are not moving.

Ears Say Moving

Step two: your inner ears. Your inner ears feel the car turning, speeding up, and slowing down. They tell your brain that you are moving.

Mixed Messages

Step three: mixed messages. Your brain gets two different stories, and the mismatch can trigger a queasy feeling. Your body is not broken. It is just confused for a little while.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at motion sickness! Your eyes might say you are still. Your ears say you are moving. Your brain gets confused. Looking at the far horizon can help the signals agree.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Many people get motion sickness on cars, boats, planes, or swings. Looking out the front window can help more than looking at a screen. Fresh air and sitting still can help you feel better. Tell a grown-up right away if you feel sick, and ask them before taking any medicine.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! On your next trip, if you feel queasy, look at the horizon. Notice if your tummy feels better. And tell the grown-up driving how you feel!
