Intro

Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do cookies spread in the oven?

The Big Idea

You put little balls of cookie dough in the oven, and out come big, flat, round cookies! As they bake, cookies go through a race between melting, puffing, and setting. Let's watch it happen!

Butter Melts

Step one: butter melts and the dough loosens. Cookie dough is full of butter, which is solid when it's cold. In the hot oven, the butter melts into liquid, and the sugar softens too. So the dough slumps, and starts spreading out.

Bubbles Puff

Step two: bubbles puff the cookie. Baking soda or baking powder makes gas bubbles, and water in the dough turns into steam. All those tiny bubbles puff the cookie up, and make it soft inside.

Edges Set

Step three: then heat sets the edges. As the cookie gets hotter, the eggs and flour firm up, like a tiny wall. That stops the spreading, and locks in the shape. The edges turn golden and crispy, while the middle stays chewy!

A Closer Look

Let's watch the whole change! It starts as a round, cold ball of dough. The butter melts, bubbles puff, and the dough spreads out. Then the edges set, and ta-da, a flat, golden cookie!

Quick Facts

Quick facts! A colder dough spreads less. Cold butter takes longer to melt, so the edges set first! More butter or sugar makes flatter, crispier cookies. More flour makes thicker, puffier cookies. Leave space between dough balls, so the cookies don't bump into each other!

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Look for a cookie recipe that chills the dough first. With a grown-up, bake some cookies from chilled dough, and some from warm dough. Which ones spread more? Measure them with a ruler!

Outro

So cookies spread because butter melts and bubbles puff, until the heat sets the edges and locks in the shape! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
