Intro
Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do we find fossils?
The Big Idea
Fossils tell us about amazing plants and animals that lived long, long ago! Fossils are the preserved remains, or traces, of ancient life. But not everything becomes a fossil. Here's how it happens!
Most Bodies Rot
Step one: most bodies rot. When a plant or animal dies, its soft parts usually rot away. Bacteria, scavengers, and weather break things down, so most living things leave nothing behind.
Burial and Minerals
Step two: quick burial, then minerals. If the remains are buried quickly by mud, sand, or silt, they may be protected. Over time, minerals from water seep in, and harden the remains, slowly turning them into stone!
Rock Wears Open
Step three: rock later wears open. Layers of rock build up over millions of years, with the fossil hidden inside. Then wind, water, or ice slowly wear the rock away, and reveal the fossil for us to find!
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look at how a fish becomes a fossil! First, the fish is buried in mud. Over a very long time, the mud turns to rock. Millions of years later, the rock wears away, and there's the fossil!
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Countless living things have come and gone, with no fossils left behind. Fossilization is rare. It takes the right place, the right time, and a little luck! Footprints and burrows can become fossils too. They're called trace fossils. Scientists who study fossils are called paleontologists.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Grab a lump of play dough. Press a shell, or a leaf, into it. Lift it out gently. What kind of impression do you make? How might this be like the way fossils form? Keep wondering, keep exploring. Science is all around you!
Outro
We find fossils when living things get buried fast, turn to stone, and the rock wears open! Keep asking, keep exploring! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
