Intro

Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do we shiver?

The Big Idea

Brrr! Have you ever been so cold that your whole body started to shake? That's shivering! It's not random at all. It's your body's smart plan to warm you up. Let's find out how, in three steps!

Body Too Cold

Step one: your body gets too cold! When it's chilly outside, or you're not dressed warmly enough, Your body temperature starts to drop. Temperature sensors in your skin notice, and warn your brain!

Muscles Twitch

Step two: your muscles twitch, on purpose! Your brain tells your muscles to start shivering. That's a quick, back-and-forth twitching, many times every second. Shivering is not random. It's your body's smart plan!

Twitching Makes Heat

Step three: twitching makes heat! All that movement uses energy, and releases heat. Your body warms up, And the heat helps bring your temperature back to normal.

A Closer Look

Let's see the whole warm-up plan! First, your body senses the cold. Next, your brain switches on shivering, and your muscles start to twitch. Then the heat from those muscles warms you up. When you're warm again, the shivering stops, all by itself!

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Teeth chatter because your jaw is shivering! Your jaw muscles twitch to make a little extra heat too. Shivering can make several times more heat than when you're resting. Goosebumps often pop up at the same time! And bumblebees shiver their flight muscles, to warm up before flying.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Rub your palms together quickly, for 10 seconds. Now stop. Can you feel the warmth? You just made heat, with movement, just like shivering does! Your body knows just what to do, to keep you warm.

Outro

So shivering is your muscles dancing to make heat. Your body is amazing! Remember, Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
