Book 32, Question 124

How many kinds of reptiles are there?

Scientists have named more than twelve thousand kinds of reptiles.

Most are lizards, with around seven thousand kinds, and snakes, with about four thousand. There are a few hundred turtles and tortoises, a couple dozen crocodiles and alligators, and the tuatara. Reptiles live on every continent except Antarctica, from hot deserts and rainforests to oceans and mountain slopes. New kinds are still being counted, so the total keeps growing a little each year.
