Book 32, Question 117
Why does a shingleback skink have a tail that looks like its head?
The shingleback is a stubby Australian lizard with a short, fat tail that looks like its head.
It has thick, bumpy scales that look like pinecone shingles. The look-alike tail might confuse an animal about which end is which. The tail also stores fat for dry times. The skink moves slowly, but its tough scales protect it.
