Book 32, Question 110
Why do Galápagos tortoises have different shell shapes?
On islands with lots of grass, tortoises have big, round, dome-shaped shells.
On drier islands where food grows higher up, like cactus pads, tortoises have shells that rise at the front like a saddle. That gives their necks room to stretch up high. Each island’s plants helped shape the tortoises. It is a good example of a body that matches its home.
