Book 32, Question 78
Which reptiles lay eggs with chalky shells?
Turtles, tortoises, crocodiles, and many geckos lay eggs with hard, chalky shells.
A hard shell is rigid and protects the baby inside. It also holds in water, which helps the egg survive in drier places. Tortoise eggs look a bit like ping-pong balls. Whether a shell is leathery or hard depends on the kind of reptile and where it lays its eggs.
