Book 32, Question 31
Why do crocodiles lie around with their mouths wide open?
Resting crocodiles often keep their mouths open and still.
Scientists think the open mouth helps with temperature control, because moist mouth skin lets heat escape as water evaporates, like sweating. It may also let air flow around the animal’s head. Birds sometimes step near the mouth, but it is just a relaxed pose. Crocodiles are wild animals, so watch from far away.
