Book 32, Question 7

Why do lizards shed their skin in patches?

Lizards grow, and their outer skin layer doesn’t grow with them, so they shed it.

Many snakes shed in one long piece, but most lizards peel off flakes and patches. Some geckos even eat their old skin. Under the shedding skin, a new layer is ready, so the lizard is protected the whole time. Shedding helps an animal stay healthy and grow.
