Book 31, Question 112
Why do some young birds help raise their younger brothers and sisters?
In some bird families, older chicks stay with their parents for a year or more and help feed the next set of chicks.
Florida scrub-jays and fairy-wrens do this. Helpers bring food, watch for danger, and help defend the family’s home. They get to practice parenting skills and share a safe territory. It’s a way families can work together and raise more healthy chicks.
