Book 31, Question 81
How do mockingbirds copy so many sounds?
A mockingbird can learn the songs of other birds and also copy sounds like a squeaky gate or a phone ring.
It has a flexible syrinx and a brain that is good at remembering patterns. One bird may sing dozens or even hundreds of different phrases, usually repeating each several times before moving on. That variety is a sign of a healthy, experienced singer.
