Book 31, Question 68
How do parent birds find their own chicks in a crowd?
On a crowded cliff or beach, thousands of chicks look alike to us.
But parents and chicks learn each other’s calls. Each chick has its own sound, and a parent comes to the chick that answers back. Some seabirds also recognize patterns on eggs or the look of their chicks. A good voice and a good memory keep families together even in noisy crowds.
