Book 31, Question 56
Why are some eggs covered in speckles?
Speckles and blotches help eggs hide.
An egg on pebbles or sand with spots that match the ground is harder to spot. Speckles can also act as a fingerprint. On crowded cliffs, each mother’s eggs have their own pattern, which can help her find her own. Some scientists think speckles may even help strengthen thin spots in the shell.
