Book 31, Question 40
Why do wading birds have such long legs?
Herons, storks, and cranes walk through shallow water to hunt for food.
Long legs let them stand deeper in the water without wetting their bodies, and let them take slow, quiet steps without scaring things away. Their long necks and sharp bills do the reaching. Long legs also help them see farther over tall grass and wetland plants.
