Book 31, Question 14
Why do birds have scaly legs?
A bird’s legs and feet are covered in scales made of keratin, the same material as your fingernails.
The scales protect the skin from scratches, rough bark, and water. They are a clue to the bird’s family history, because birds are distant cousins of reptiles. Only the legs and feet have scales. The rest of the body is covered with feathers.
