Book 30, Question 94

Why do towns protect the lakes and rivers that supply their drinking water?

Every drop of treated drinking water starts somewhere.

If the lake or river is polluted by fertilizer, oil, or waste, the water is harder and more costly to clean. So many towns protect shorelines, limit what can be built nearby, and watch for spills. Healthy forests and wetlands around a lake help filter water naturally. Protecting the source is easier than cleaning up later.
