Book 30, Question 12
How do scientists compare how big lakes are?
It depends on how you measure.
Lake Superior has the biggest surface area of any freshwater lake. Lake Baikal in Russia holds the most fresh water of any lake because it is so deep. The Caspian Sea, which is salty, is called the largest lake by area of all. Scientists use area, volume, and depth to compare lakes, since each tells a different part of the story.
