Book 30, Question 11

Why is Lake Superior so cold?

Lake Superior is the largest of the Great Lakes by area, and it holds more water than the other four combined.

Because it is so big and deep, it takes a long time to warm in summer. Cold water from the bottom mixes in, so swimmers often find the water chilly even in July. Its average summer surface temperature is only about 10 to 16 degrees Celsius.
