Book 29, Question 128
What happens to bean seedlings in sun, shade, and darkness?
Seedlings in bright light grow short, strong, and green.
In shade, they stretch toward the light and look paler and thinner. In total darkness, they grow tall and yellow-white, because they can't make chlorophyll without light. They live only as long as the seed's stored food lasts, then collapse. This experiment shows why light is vital.
