Book 29, Question 108
What do gardeners mean by sweet soil and sour soil?
Gardeners measure soil with a scale called pH.
Soil that is acidic, with a low number, is called sour, and soil that is alkaline, with a high number, is called sweet. Most vegetables grow best in soil that is close to the middle. Blueberries like sour soil, and some other plants like it sweeter. Test kits show the pH, and gardeners can adjust it by adding things like lime or sulfur.
