Book 29, Question 107
Which living things break down a compost pile?
Billions of invisible bacteria and fungi do most of the work, starting the breakdown.
Then small animals join in: pill bugs, springtails, mites, millipedes, beetles, and earthworms chew the pieces into smaller bits. Together they turn scraps into humus. Each creature has a job, and each one eats what the last left behind. Compost is full of life.
