Book 29, Question 105
Why should you stay off wet garden soil?
Wet soil is soft and sticky, and when you walk on it, you squeeze out the air spaces between the particles.
This is called compaction. Squashed soil is hard for roots to push through and for water to soak into. That is why gardeners use paths, boards, or raised beds, and wait until the soil crumbles in the hand before digging. Healthy soil is full of tiny air pockets.
