Book 29, Question 71

Are ants friends or foes of garden plants?

Ants have mixed effects.

Some ants guard aphids and collect their sweet honeydew, which can protect aphids. But ants also dig tunnels that let air and water into the soil, eat other insects, and recycle dead material. Some ants move seeds, planting wildflowers like violets. Most ants are harmless to plants, and a few can bite or sting, so watch where you step.
