Book 28, Question 110
Why do soccer players need shin guards?
Your shin bone sits just under the skin with hardly any muscle over it, so a kick or a stud can hurt a lot.
Shin guards slide under the socks and cover that spot. A hard plate takes the hit, and foam against the leg makes it softer. Pads have to fit well and be worn the right way, and they protect against bumps and bruises but do not make a player invincible.
