Book 28, Question 101
How does a photo finish camera tell who won?
A finish camera looks straight along the finish line and records a thin slice of the scene thousands of times each second.
Those slices are lined up side by side to make a picture where the sideways direction shows time instead of space. The first part of a runner to cross the line appears first. Judges can read each runner's time to a thousandth of a second.
