Book 28, Question 64
Why do track officials measure the wind?
A strong wind from behind helps sprinters run faster, and a headwind slows them.
To keep records fair, officials measure the wind speed during sprints and jumps. If the tailwind is stronger than 2 meters per second, about 4.5 miles per hour, the time or distance is not counted as an official record. This keeps comparisons honest.
