Book 28, Question 63

Why are rowing boats so long and narrow?

A rowing shell is built to slice through water with very little drag.

Long, thin hulls make less splash and slip forward easily. The oars are levers that turn a rower’s leg and back power into push on the water. Teams use perfectly matched strokes so the boat doesn’t wobble. The rowers face backward, toward the stern, while the boat moves forward.
