Book 28, Question 12

What happens when a bat hits a ball?

For about one thousandth of a second, the bat and ball squash together.

The ball flattens to about half its width and then springs back, pushing off the bat. The ball's speed after the hit depends on how fast the pitch came in and how fast the bat swung. A bat swung fast can send the ball off faster than the pitch.
